In the latest version of optifine there is a option to have client side lighting from torches in hand and flaming mobs etc. Would that be considered an unfair advantage or would it be fine to use that?

people change their gamma so they basically have full bright, i'm pretty sure a little effect like that is alright

It's the same that some shader mods have. It is permitted.

It's a feature I wish was in vanilla Minecraft, especially with duel wielding.

Yeah that feature is super handy, waiting on 1.10 optifine, i miss dynamic lighting :(

Optifine 1.10 is already out. Just go to the download page and above the latest versions you can click "preview versions" and there you can download the 1.10 optifine.
