I crafted a pattern, then put it on a shield. But the pattern disappeared on the shield, it's just pure white now. What caused this?

It's possible that the visual translation of the banner onto the shield isn't coming out the same way it does on the banner. I know that shield patterns are more pixelated and less detailed than their corresponding banners, so that may be the issue.

^ that is definitely it. I tried out that pattern on a creative single player, and had the same thing happen. It's better to leave this pattern as a banner than a shield :y

Can't you just use grey dye to create the same banner? Maybe try that.

Since the shield has less space than the banner, the colors smudge up ;
and in this case, all of the white smudges up with the banner therefore leading it to not show a pattern. This is also because, there is not a wide range of color choice in this banner, everything is either white/ gray so you can basically see the patterns, but they're very fainted.
