I like the idea of having a building competition and then having the area cleared after. It would be a lot of work for staff to organize though (and they already work so hard)

Not that I visit other servers, hhmm, but I have seen square flat areas set aside for individuals to build on a survival server. Using such for sculpture competitions sounds like a nice idea to me. We could also have a chunk house competition.

Then we can spend hours setting up dozens of little protection boxes and then adding specific friends to them etc.

no setting up doesnt take that long
use wooden axe, then world edit a building out of wilderness and paste it on a flat land already in protection
bt otherwise the public could help with any processes that we can help with

We have no plugins, remember? It would have to be done via vanilla means such as command blocks and some commands

No we cant, thats not how it works unless you want everyone to have access to your plot. Which means they can grief it.

Just go to a building server if you want to have your build protected, this is a PVE PVP Vanilla Survival server...
