Advertising on Other Servers (Staff Please Read)

  1. 8 years ago

Hello, on CraftyMynes tonight, a player named Impactic came online and informed us that a player named Fordweed was advertising CraftyMynes on another server.

I was a little surprised to hear that that was prohibited (purely because it wasn't on our server) but I could understand it so I didn't say anything. However, I was shocked when Fordweed was then Permanently Banned (without warning) for doing so. The reason I find this absolutely ludicrous is because the subject of advertising on other servers receives no mention in the rules, yet the punishment for doing so is a permanent ban without any sort of warning.

I'm not asking for advertising on other servers to be allowed, but I do think that the punishment for doing so is far too severe, at least considering that it receives no mention in the rules. For this reason, I made this post to ask that the rule either be put in the rulebook, or that the punishment be reduced to either a shorter, temporary ban, or a warning and then permaban.

I also realize that the general attitude on CraftyMynes seems to be "If you disagree with a rule, then leave", and for that reason and the simple fact that I understand and agree with all the other rules, I never questioned any of them. But this struck me as just completely and utterly wrong, and I couldn't just brush it off. I feel it is important to bring this up as there can be no growth without addressing arising concerns.

I thank you for reading my post, and I hope you can bring yourselves to thoroughly consider my request, because for reasons I cannot fathom, I feel that it's relevant to the integrity of the server, its staff, and it's policies.

    Sincerely,
    - Jackieinabox

(P.S. I feel it relevant to note that I had never before seen or spoken to Fordweed, and this post is borne of a desire to draw attention to a policy I feel is incorrect, NOT as a biased and sneaky way to appeal for someone's ban.)

  2. Thanks for bringing this up Jackie...
The said player in mention is always able to appeal for an unban on the forums :) i cannot say much else on behalf of the staff as situatioms like this are usually a whole discussion upon the admins and crafty on the best route to take, so i dont want to pass on false information... I do see your concern though and ill see if it can properly be answered by another admin / Crafty.

  3. Thank you Rylee, a little attention brought to this issue is all i'm asking. :)

  4. The rules have already been in revision for the past few weeks, and this rule was already added. This ban will remain permanent. In any case, one of our rules here include this one:

"Listen to staff members - Enough said! People will always find ways around the rules, staff reserve the right to make changes to the rules to cover these holes in order to keep the server a safe friendly place."

    Which is applied here.

All advertising are permanent bans. "No advertising" covers all types, including advertising our server on another server.

    Why?

We don't allow advertisers on our server, it would extremely hypocritical and absolutely disgusting for us to allow people to advertise OUR server on other's peoples server. The whole “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” applies here.

Frankly I find it ridiculous that we have to specify every single little thing that's considered common sense.

As a player, and admin on another server, I always hated it when people came on and advertised. I felt that the server they were advertising for was junk and not worth my time. I'm glad to see Crafty and Co. has made steps to prevent the ever annoying advsrtisers, and I have much resepct for him and the other staff.
I feel this is an excellent rule in my opinion. As far as the punishment being permanent or not i will not comment on, but the fact that he was banned or atleast reprimanded is a good step for the integrity of the server and Crafty himself. I hate when people come on Craftymynes and advertise for their punk server, so what sense does it make to advertise for Craftymynes on another server(sorry had to edit that lol darn you auto correct).
I don't wish to argue, and as I believe your main point is that it wasn't mentioned in the rules that is a point only staff can address.
Just thought I would give some player insight into what I thought, sorry if it causes a problem. Keep up the great work staff!

  6. Ill pass on with the information then.

As with our own server, we strongly believe that advertising for others is wrong.
On our server, we warn someone and then ban them as some players may not understand our rules just yet.

Incidents that involve our name, outside our server, that are reported back to us are dealt with much more strongly. We did not ask him to advertise us, we did not want him to advertise us. We do not appreciate someone affiliating themselves with our name and making us look bad to other servers. As the leader on the vanilla server boards, we don't need someone advertising us. Especially when we work hard to make friends with other server owners by not allowing our name to be spread like that. Server owners colaberate, share information on hackers, potential we see in players, tips and tricks on how to make things work better. It counts as a chat violation in our server and outside of it.

    TL|DR
Advertising is frowned upon in almost every server. We, as a server, don't need that kind of affiliation.

  7. I absolutely understand that, but it isn't the integrity of advertising that's in question. I agree that advertising is not something that should be tolerated, the point of this post was that at least at the time of his banning, there was no warning in the rules or elsewhere for advertising on another server, in what very well might have been nothing more than "Hey guy I love this server called Craftymynes". I also understand that the "Listen to staff members" rule is important and fair, but the banned party was not online, and had no chance to defend himself. It is not the action itself that I'm questioning, its simply the fact that Fordweed almost certainly was unaware that he was doing anything wrong, as I was.

This alone is the issue I am presenting.

  8. It's not really my problem whether or not this player was aware of the ruling or not. He was aware of the ruling on the server he chose to advertise on, and guess what? Server owners and admins talk to each other.
And it wasn't really a casual "wow I love this server named this" it was a blatant "join this server" just to disrespect said server/owner he was advertising on.

  9. I would respectfully point out that it is your problem, as delivering a severe punishment to someone for doing something they had no idea was wrong is morally wrong. Regardless of any personal feelings from anyone on the matter (I know I certainly have some), his behaviour was in accordance with what he believed to be in accordance with the rules. Had he known, he very well may have acted differently. Moreover, it is not this particular individual who I am concerned for, it is the potential of this happening again as a result of a lack of clarity.

  10. The lack of clarity issue has been addressed, in any case. It's not in current rules, but it's already in the new rules that's has been worked on.

I'll also add that this player has 754 ticks.

I don't really think he would've acted differently.

  11. This is precisely why we reserve the right to modify the rules without warning for any reason we choose.
The rules cannot possibly cover every scenario.
This person committed an act which harmed our server and as such was banned for it, intent is what matters here.
However we do ban advertising anyway even if it doesn't specify other servers anyway so that kind of defeats your whole point here.

  12. If the lack of clarity in the rules has been addressed, the goal of this post has been achieved and I am satisfied.

Thank you to all who took the time to read/consider my request, I do appreciate it more than you may realize.

And R4, I would again state that it was not Fordweed I was concerned for, it was the potential for future rule breaking as a result of the accused party's lack of information.

I thank all of you again. :)

If people can't work out that advertising us elsewhere is an offense and may be punished then Craftymynes may not be the server for them. It does imply a certain lack of common sense and disregard for the rules as well.
Even if its not explicitly mentioned in the rules but instead falls under our right to modify them when necessary.
However the issue has been resolved so thread locked.
